Yesterday, I downloaded UBCD4Win v 3.5 and today created my disk to try and fix the hive issue on my son's laptop. I loaded UBCD4Win interface to get to Start > Programs > Registry Tools > Registry Restore Wizard, but after clicking on it, I receive the following error:
Run-time error '52':
Bad file name or number
I double check my build and made sure that the Registry Restore Wizard plug-in was enabled (although I assume since it was available in the menus, it would have had to be enabled) and I tried to click on the Config button in the case that I was missing something, but there is no configuration needed for this plug-in. Am I missing something on my end (would not be surprising considering the day I've had) or is there something else going on that is causing this issue? I appreciate any and all help you can provide at your convenience. Thank you!

I'm not sure why it's failing and I won't have time for several more hours to compile a debug version for you to try but THIS thread explains how to manually restore your registry.
If you're afraid of taking any chances then the chances are great that you will never learn anything

Well, that was interesting, to say the least. I followed the link that you provided and scrolled to the part about manually restoring the registry hives. By utilizing Start > Programs > Command Prompt, I could not access my C:\ drive much less my system volume information. It just kept bouncing me back to the X:\ drive that UBCD4Win created when loaded. I had previously run various other hard disk utilities trying to determine what was wrong with the laptop to begin with (except for chkdsk because I could not access the command prompt) and nothing was found to be wrong with the drive. Since I seemed to be at another impasse, I decided to run chkdsk as stated previously in the post you directed me to and it did fix several things. It didn't fix my ability to access the C:\ drive or the system volume information however, but as a fluke, I tried to run the Registry Restore Wizard again (yes, I'm quite stubborn). This time, not only did I NOT receive the run-time error, but it ran flawlessly and now the laptop is back to booting properly. So, with your help and my stubbornness, the problem has been solved. I appreciate you taking the time to point me in the right direction. Thank you!

I'm glad to hear it.
Thanks for reporting back, I'm sure it'll help someone else in the future.
