Hi, I'm having a problem with loading UBCD. The system boots to the disc, and I select the option to boot UBCD. The windows logo appears, the status bar churns for a bit, then the background turns to a sky blue. I can see and move the mouse, but there is nothing else on the screen. Has anyone encountered this? Sorry if this is a double post, but my forum search didn't turn up anything other than BSOD errors.
UBCD compiled with no errors with XP2 slipstream disc. (XP Disc works fine)
Background:
This is a coworker's Dell XPS400. Getting 'windows cannot load because \windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing.
Processor is unknown.
4GB ram
160 GB seagate Sata HDD
Video card type unknown

Does anyone have any advice, or know of an easier way to fix this issue? Recovery console is out because there is no 3.5" floppy to load the Sata drivers.

Thanks

What you are describing, normally turns out to be either bad memory (use memtest) or a failing hard drive.

Providing that you are using the bts mass storage drivers (enabled by default) you can press CONFIG on the plugin page for Recover Console and choose to include the BTS drivers which will make CMDC also have all of the sata drivers that are included in the booted UBCD4WIN.

Thanks, I'm rebuilding and burning a new disc now. I'll repost with the results later.

Tried the new disc with BTS drivers. This time the screen went light blue, and the mouse went through a few pointer to hourglass changes, and now it's just not doing anything again. Am I missing something? Is there a keyboard sequence to get the menus to populate? Is there a chance that this PC's graphics card could be stuck on a higher resolution than my monitor can handle? Also, could this happen if the HDD is not detected? If the particular sata driver isn't in the BTS pack, that could be the cause?

Your registry hive is corrupted, usually because of either a corrupted filesystem or a failing drive.

Yes. It's usually because of a corrupted filesystem or failing hard drive.

Try booting UBCD4Win with your hard drive unplugged to confirm that this is the problem. If it boots, shut down the computer and plug your hard drive back in then boot NTFS4Dos and run chkdsk.

Does UBCD4Win boot now? If so then backup your data before doing any other diagnostics.
If you're afraid of taking any chances then the chances are great that you will never learn anything
