First let me say this project is really Great- finally a fantastic live cd for windows users! I love it! Something like this is long-overdue.

I just did a fresh install of winXP Pro, NTFS, and did the latest default ubcd4win build. Everything worked out great first time, except for 2 nagging problems. I even built some of my own plugins for my apps for the 2nd build, and they also worked fine. Let me say also that I'm very experienced in all aspects of desktop computers, windows (all versions), and linux (many distros) for 10+ years, build my own systems, and administer several Gentoo Linux ~x86 systems (testing builds).

That's why my only 2 problems with ubcd4win seem so frustrating- I just must be missing something very simple, and can't believe I haven't been able to solve this. I've read and tried every suggestion on this forum, literally spent 6 days googling and researching every conceivable concept and related websites, and rebuilt ubcd4win isos and edited all the relevant files countless times. You name it, I've tried it.

Problem 1: I can't seem to add any more quick launch buttons to the taskbar. I've really given this a tremendous amount of effort. The first four default items always appear, and work, and I can swap out different apps (editing) for the the four stanzas (8 lines each) in geoshell.inf. However, adding more stanzas for more apps just will not work for me!

I've almost worn out a cdrw disk rebuilding countless times after editing files. I tried qemu, which works, but even on the default install with the 4 working quicklaunch buttons, they don't show up, so I've had to actually burn each new version to see if my edits solved it.

If someone who has added more functioning QL buttons would please post their complete geoshell.inf file, and outline the correct procedure, I would be forever greatful! This is driving me crazy! The sections and information on the older posts here on the forums, or anywhere on the internet simply don't work. I can post my latest, if need be. I'm running high end hardware, so that's no problem.

Problem 2: While my regular wired ethernet connection is detected fine, I can't get wireless (D-Link DWL-G510 card, with Atheros chipset) to come up. Wireless works fine booted to winXP, Gentoo Linux, and any number of Linux live cd's after I get the madwifi driver and tools. I've tried the new DWL rev. b drivers I found, and read the thread here about this. Any progress yet on this, or is this card problematic?

I really think that once the countless millions of windows users discover this project, it will become a tremendously popular tool, even far more than the recent really fine Linux live cd's have become with Linux users.

Thanks in advance for any advice on these nagging problems- overall, they are pretty minor, considering all the apps seem to work from the start menu fine. I just really miss the taskbar quicklaunch buttons, and when I show this cd to people, I'd really like to have them set up for the most useful tools.

Good luck adding more buttons. Previous versions of the project had 6 or more, but with this release I wanted to save some real estate. Plus I'm not really sure if it's possible. I am not a GeoShell pro here. I do understand the plugins and can modify some things, but I did not create either of them. Digi created the first GeoShell plugin for the project and MauricioXP created the latest. I think I do recall him telling me it wasn't possible to add more, or you had to change a lot of things in the plugin in order for it to work. So sorry I can't help, if you figure something out....please let us know.

As for the networking issue. I'm sorry, there is something wrong with the MMC 2.0 plugin that is included in the project. We tested many different builds over the last couple of months and none of the beta testers reported any issues like this. I guess that's probably because none of us have that hardware that you guys are having problems with.

I posted yesterday in another thread about this that I was going to check into the "problem" plugin. The MMC plugin is very long and complex, it contains a lot of registry entries in it. So it's going to take me a while to work my way through the files comparing and see if anything seems out of place. Hopefully I will be able to figure it out.

Maybe something here will help figure this out, and give someone else a clue- I'm presently stumped.

The Quick Launch folder, with all the user's current launchers on the launch toolbar (as shortcuts) is in:

C:\Documents and Settings\wrc\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Where "wrc" is my current user I created during installation of winXPsp2.

This quick launch directory is NOT present in ubcd4win, as there is no actual "user," as created during a normal winXP install procedure. There are in ubcd4win the following:

Name Path
Application Specific Data: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
Common Administrative Tools: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\
Common Application Data: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
Common Desktop Directory: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\
Common Favorites: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Favorites\
Internet Cookies: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Cookies\
Windows Desktop: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Desktop\
Desktop Directory: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Desktop\
Device: X:\I386\INF\
Favorites: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Favorites\
Fonts: X:\I386\FONTS\
History: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\History\
Internet Cache: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
Personal: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents\
Program Files: \
Programs: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs\
Recent Documents: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Recent\
Send To: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\SendTo\
Start Menu: B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\
Startup: B:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
System: X:\I386\SYSTEM32\
Temp Directory: B:\
Windows: X:\I386\
x86 system directory on RISC: X:\I386\SYSTEM32\
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When installing winXPsp2, you MUST create at least one user to continue the install. I think this could be the reason we can't get this to function in ubcd4win (no actual "user" has been created). What I don't understand yet is why the four taskbar QL shortcuts in geoshell.inf do work, but adding more of them doesn't. I can't find anything (edits) in all the ubcd4win config files that seems to affect this.

In normal winxpSP2 installs, there are two "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ paths, but neither has the Quick Launch" directory included in Internet Explorer It's only present in the user's path that was created by the person installing XP.

During internet searches, I also ran across references to a quicklaunch.dll file, but it's not present in any of my winXPsp2 installs, or ubcd4win. There is a geoshell "GEOLAUNCH.dll" in C:\pebuilder3\plugin\GeoShell\GeoShell\files\GEOSHELL\PLUGINS, (among others) if that's relevant.

In winXPsp2, I have 100 running dlls, while booted to ubcd4win, there are only 79. Hmmmm....

Maybe having a real "quick launch" toolbar depends on a full IE version being installed, which of course ubcd4win does not?

Place your icon here:
plugin\GeoShell\GeoShell\files\GEOSHELL\ICONS

Modify:

@geoshell.inf
CODE FOR SPYBOT
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","HotKey",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Icon","icons\spybot.ico"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Parameters",""
0x2, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Path and FileName","%systemdrive%\PROGRAMS\spybot\SpybotSD.EXE"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Start-In Path",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","ToolTip","SpyBot!!"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Verb",""
0x4, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Show As", 0x00000001

I copied this code and modified it for my GAIM PLUGIN
CODE FOR GAIM - Entered in geoshell.inf
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","HotKey",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Icon","icons\gaim.ico"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Parameters",""
0x2, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Path and FileName","%systemdrive%\PROGRAMS\GAIM\gaim_sfx.EXE"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Start-In Path",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","ToolTip","GAIM"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Verb",""
0x4, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Show As", 0x00000001

Information pertaining to this subject:
http://docs.geoshell...ay/R4/GeoLaunch

What I can't do is figure out how to add more entries than the 4. I can change them just not add. I have tried geOLaunch0_5 and it adds the reg entries but Geoshell doesn't add the icon.

To add multiple icons-

Place your icon here:
plugin\GeoShell\GeoShell\files\GEOSHELL\ICONS

Modify:

@geoshell.inf
CODE FOR SPYBOT
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","HotKey",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Icon","icons\spybot.ico"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Parameters",""
0x2, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Path and FileName","%systemdrive%\PROGRAMS\spybot\SpybotSD.EXE"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Start-In Path",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","ToolTip","SpyBot!!"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Verb",""
0x4, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_2","Show As", 0x00000001

I copied the above code and modified it for my GAIM PLUGIN pasting it after the last sequence of the above code.
CODE FOR GAIM - Entered in geoshell.inf
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","HotKey",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","Icon","icons\gaim.ico"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","Parameters",""
0x2, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","Path and FileName","%systemdrive%\PROGRAMS\GAIM\gaim_sfx.EXE"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","Start-In Path",""
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","ToolTip","GAIM"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","Verb",""
0x4, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Plugins\geOLaunch0_5","Show As", 0x00000001

Orginal code:
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","0","geoLaunch,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","1","geoLaunch,0_2"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","2","geoLaunch,0_3"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","3","geoLaunch,0_4"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","4","geoTasks,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","5","geoSpacer,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","6","geoTray,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","7","geODateTime,0_1"

New Code:
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","0","geoLaunch,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","1","geoLaunch,0_2"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","2","geoLaunch,0_3"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","3","geoLaunch,0_4"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","4","geoLaunch,0_5"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","5","geoTasks,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","6","geoSpacer,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","7","geoTray,0_1"
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","8","geODateTime,0_1"

In effect you just add a new line:
0x1, "Software\Geo\GeoShell\Services\Plugins\GeoBar (0)","4","geoLaunch,0_5"
then up the number by one for each entry after.

lawson23,

Many thanks! I'll give this a try, and rebuild the iso. I was doing the first part in the top section exactly as you describe from the first time I tried this. However, I simply failed to notice the second section, where you have to add the geolaunch lines that refer to the extra "hotkey" 8 line sections added above. And this after I had reviewed geoshell.info many, many times!

This certainly explains why I wasn't getting them to show up.

I'll post back later- I feel this will work fine.
